Networks

Advantages

  • Access files from different places
  • Some programmes can be lisenced on a network for cheaper
  • Certain hardware can be shared
  • Files can be backed up all at once, rather than for each individual computer
  • Messages can be sent to other computers over the network

Disadvantages

  • Vulnerable to viruses
  • Can be unreliable
  • If the server comes down then the whole network is offline
  • Wiring and installation can be expensive to buy and install
  • A trained person is needed to run it
  • External communication equipment can be expensive to run

LANs and WANs

  • LANs are local area networks, and are fairly close. Usually within a single building. They are connected with wires or radio wireless transmitters.
  • WANs are wide area networks. They are spread over a much larger area in different buildings, different sites and even different countries. They use telephones, satellites or cables. The internet is a WAN.
